POSTPONED EVENT Orkney International Science Festival at Hoy Kirk
Due to ongoing work at the Hoy Kirk the Orkney International Science Festival event planned for 04 Sept has been held over to next year’s programme.
It will be worth the wait to see Selena S. Kuzman’s film Around the Glens of Hoy narrated by Adrian Hall. Selena’s film Swona on a Morning Tide will go ahead on Saturday 05 Sept at 10am at the Orkney Theatre – details here https://oisf.org/fest-event/film-swona-on-a-morning-tide/

We are delighted to be partnering up again with Orkney International Science Festival for the annual Hoy event. Join us for a social evening starting with a light supper of Orkney fare before we settle down to a feast for the eyes. Orkney International Science Festival are thrilled to present the new film by Selena S. Kuzman featuring the remarkable landscape of Hoy. Narrated by geologist Dr Adrian Hall.
note: Hoy Kirk is currently closed to the public for building works. We will open for the festival event only.
Hoy Heritage Centre closed for building work
We remain closed for building work to the kirk. It’s coming along great and we look forward to re-opening a beautiful weather-tight building. the Kirk was opening in 1892 replacing the old Kirk at the Bu graveyard.

We are delighted that work has started on our building to secure it for the community for years to come. There is some work going on inside for the next fortnight or so, due to this we will be closed to the public for the time being. Opening before too long. Free fiddle workshop with Jennifer Wrigley now also open to Stromness beginners / intermediates

Beginner/Intermediate Orkney Fiddle Workshop with Jennifer Wrigley – open to all ages. Absolute beginners welcome to take part/listen. Players of instruments other than fiddle also welcome if of an intermediate level of ability.
All welcome to this fun and relaxed workshop focussing on traditional fiddle. This fiddle workshop is open to fiddlers of all levels (beginning to advanced). We will start with a brief overview of fiddling, its stylistic elements, and its history with musical examples. The group will work through Jennifer’s version of ‘Jimmy o’ the Bu’s Polka’ going over specific ornamentation and additional techniques.
Music will be provided if needed – please bring your own music stand if required. If there is time left over at the end of the workshop we will hold an informal open question and answer session about the music.
Come and immerse yourself in the music with like-minded fiddlers and musicians!

Milestones
Calling Hoy & Walls photographers!
Across the Hoy and Walls there are around a dozen milestones, believed to have been erected by the Middlesmores of Melsetter in the late 19th or early 20th century. Hoy Heritage Centre will be producing a publication where the milestones act like chapters with photographs of Hoy and Walls between those milestones.
Our focus for the Milestones project is young people (40 and under) but we welcome everyone who is resident in Hoy & Walls and wants to get involved regardless of age. People are invited to submit photographs taken in Hoy & Walls, this can be any subject and can have been taken at any time. We will also be looking at some archive photographs. Young photographers can access feedback on their work and tutoring sessions.
How can you get involved?
- Locating and mapping the milestones
- Researching the history of the milestones
- Submitting photographs taken in Hoy & Walls (stating where they were taken so they can be mapped between the milestones)
