It’s another of our Hoy Wonder series of art and nature events. This time get lost in the wonders of the shore with marine marvel Katy Firth. Katy will lead the group on a shore survey to see what creatures call Moaness home. Record marine life and make a cyanotype print.
Meet at the pier at 1pm. Bring wellies. For all ages but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us on Friday 12 August at Hoy Heritage Centre when poet and writer Yvonne Gray will lead a writing workshop, one of our summer series of Hoy Wonder nature and art events, 11am-2.30pm Hoy Heritage Centre.
We will do a warm-up exercise and work on a variety of short pieces of writing – poetry and prose – inspired by or reflecting on the place we are in and what we discover in it. Bring paper or notebook, pen or pencil, and a packed lunch. If weather permits, we may spend some time writing outside. Places are free but limited. Contact us here to book or call 07762570215.
Following the workshop there will be plenty time left for a short walk and visit Beneth’ill Café near the pier.

REFURBISHMENT OF INTERIOR SOUTH WALL OF KIRK and REFURBISHMENT OF INTERIOR OF ENTRANCE VESTIBULE OF HOY KIRK
In an endeavor to make the Hoy Heritage Centre more energy efficient we want to carry out a refurbishment project. Please find below the specification for the proposed project. It would be appreciated if you can send your quotation for the works described to the Friends of Hoy Kirk Secretary by email by 1st August 2022. Please see attached document for details.
Thanks to John Crossley for a Hoy Wonderful day looking at the wild grasses. We hadn’t even left the pier before we were introduced to the beauty of False Oat-grass and Cock’s-foot. Further up the hill the soft purple haze of Yorkshire-fog caught our eye and near to Hoy Kirk an elegant Tall Fescue was rather fetching. Tufted Hair-grass, Timothy, Meadow Foxtail…..in all we found 18 grass species plus a few other rushes, sedges and horsetails.

As part of our Hoy Wonder art & nature programme this summer we are delighted to announce the next event.
Join us on Thursday 30 June for a wild grasses walk along the verges in Hoy in the expert company of naturalist and Orkney plant recorder John Crossley. The grasses are a fascinating group and are often overlooked but not on the 30th June when they will be centre stage.
The day will be a relaxed and restorative day with plenty of time to browse the Effy Everiss natural history library at Hoy Heritage Centre (especially the excellent grasses section) and time to enjoy a cup of tea and cake at the Benet’hill Café in the afternoon for those getting the afternoon boat back from Moaness.
The day will begin at 10:30 at Moaness Pier and the workshop will run until 2:30.
