Between the hills

These May days are perfect for a trip between the hills of Hoy through to Rackwick. Photographer Robert Heddle Roberston  born in 1872 took this photograph and it is one of nearly 2,500 glass plate negatives by RHR held at Orkney Library & Archive.

I wonder if the woman in the photograph was botanising? We are honoured to have been gifted a substantial library of books by the late Effy Everiss and we are in the process of cataloguing them ready to display later this month. It might be over a 100 years too late for the lady in the photograph but contemporary visitors will soon be able to confidently identify their mosses and grasses, fungi, lichen and more thanks to Effy’s generous gift. The collection will bear Effy’s name.
