The girl on the left looking back at her schoolmates is Ennie Nicolson of West End, Neil Leask’s grandmother’s sister. Neil will be joining us on Friday 16 September at Hoy Kirk to share the photographs, communications and keepsakes he has saved from his Aunt’s house. Neil’s links to Hoy include a connection to the kirk – the small mound of stones next to the kirk was once a croft called Burncott (sometimes Wicks) where Neil’s family lived. Among the receipts, books, newspaper clippings and photographs, Neil also has a flail from West End, wooden hems for an ox, his aunt’s hat and sweetie boxes and packaging. Expect an absorbing evening.
